Walgett Shire is a vast and diverse region in the Orana area of north-west New South Wales, stretching to the Queensland border and shaped by the flow of two major inland rivers—the Barwon and the Namoi. The township of Walgett sits where these rivers meet, at the junction of the Kamilaroi and Castlereagh Highways, serving as both a civic and cultural hub for the Shire.

Covering more than 22,000 square kilometres, the Shire spans fertile agricultural lands to the south and east where wool, wheat, cotton and cattle production thrive and outback country to the north-west, home to the world-renowned black opal fields of Lightning Ridge. This natural and economic contrast defines the character of Walgett: practical, resourceful, and deeply rooted in land and community.

With a population of just over 6,000 people across the Shire, Walgett is proud of its cultural strength, including a vibrant Aboriginal community that makes up nearly one-third of all residents.
