The Shoalhaven region, located approximately 180km south of Sydney, comprises of substantial areas of national park, state forest, bushland, beaches and lakes and includes 49 towns and villages. The natural amenity of the area is a strong attractor, for both new residents, holiday makers and day trippers. With its spectacular natural environment, growing population and robust economy, the Shoalhaven is a wonderful place to live, work, stay and play. Shoalhaven City Council is the local government authority for the area, which spans from Barrengarry to the north and South Durras in the south. Nowra is the largest coastal town on the NSW south coast and is the business and administrative ‘capital’ of the Shoalhaven.
The community’s vision for the Shoalhaven is to foster a safe and attractive community for people to live, work, stay and play; where sustainable growth, development and environmental protection are managed to provide a unique and relaxed lifestyle. Shoalhaven 2027 Community Strategic Plan is guiding this vision, with key themes being, safe and inclusive communities, sustainable, liveable environments, prosperous communities and responsible governance.
These key themes compliment the work of the Welcoming Cities network, who strive to support local councils and their communities in the advancement of Australia as a welcoming, prosperous and cohesive nation.
