With an estimated population of more than 295,000 (2025), the City of Greater Geelong is Victoria’s largest provincial city. Located 75 kilometres south-west of Melbourne, the municipality covers an area of 1,247 km2 on Wadawurrung Country, comprising suburban, coastal and country areas.

The region is home to the award winning waterfront overlooking Corio Bay, the picturesque Bellarine Peninsula, the Barwon River and You Yangs Regional Park, and is the gateway to the Great Ocean Road.

Greater Geelong is a multicultural and welcoming place to people from many countries. More than 17 per cent of our total population was born overseas, with the United Kingdom, India, New Zealand, the Philippines, Italy and China being the most common birthplaces.

The municipality has been recognised as a ‘Refugee Welcome Zone’ since 2002 and welcomes hundreds of refugees every year as one of the primary settlement areas in Victoria for humanitarian entrants.
